Sydney Venues Need a Straw That Meets the NSW Ban

NSW banned single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cutlery from 1 November 2022 under the Plastic Reduction and Circular Economy Act. For Sydney's cafés, restaurants, cocktail bars and bubble tea shops — from the CBD and Surry Hills to Newtown, Parramatta, Chatswood and Burwood — that means every straw handed over the counter has to be a compliant alternative. We cover exactly what the rules require in our guide to the NSW plastic straw ban.

Sugarcane straws are the alternative that does not punish the customer for the rule change. Made from bagasse — the fibre left over after sugar is pressed from cane — they are plastic-free, PFAS-free and certified commercially compostable, and they hold their shape in a drink for hours instead of minutes.

A NSW Company, Supplying NSW Venues

EcoGreen Supplies (Eco Green Supplies Pty Ltd) is an Australian private company registered in New South Wales, supplying venues Australia-wide. Orders ship in bulk cartons with live carrier rates shown at checkout — you pay exactly what the courier charges, with no freight markup — and most Sydney metro deliveries arrive within 2–3 business days of dispatch.

Whether you run a single espresso bar in Marrickville or order for venues across the metro area, the same wholesale carton pricing applies, and bulk pricing is available for trade accounts.

    Sizes for Every Sydney Menu

Regular 6mm straws suit coffees, juices and soft drinks; short cocktail straws fit small-format drinks; wide 8mm jumbo straws handle smoothies and thick shakes; and 12mm bubble tea straws — plain or individually wrapped for takeaway hygiene — are built for boba. Every size is certified commercially compostable and breaks down within about 90 days in commercial composting conditions.

    Sydney straw questions

Are sugarcane straws legal in NSW?
Yes. The Plastic Reduction and Circular Economy Act prohibits single-use plastic straws from 1 November 2022, and that ban targets plastic — including bioplastic and PLA straws, which are still plastic. Straws moulded from sugarcane fibre are not a plastic and are not caught by it. The ban also preserves access to straws for people with a disability or medical need.
How fast can you deliver straws to Sydney?
Most Sydney metro deliveries arrive within 2-3 business days of dispatch through One World Courier's carrier network. Freight is quoted live at checkout from the carrier's real rate for your address and order size and charged at cost, so there is no flat-rate markup to absorb.
Do you supply Sydney cafés and bars wholesale?
Yes. Sydney venues order the same bulk cartons at the same wholesale rates as the rest of the country, and trade accounts get carton pricing, scheduled resupply and 30-day terms once approved. Free samples are available first so you can test the straws in your own drinks before committing.
What size straws do Sydney venues usually order?
Regular 6mm covers coffee, juice, soft drink and water and is what most venues buy first. Cocktail 6mm suits espresso martinis, spritzes and anything under about 250ml, jumbo 8mm handles smoothies and thickshakes, and 12mm is for bubble tea and pearls — wrapped for takeaway counters or unwrapped for dine-in. Most venues stock a regular plus one specialist size.
    Do sugarcane straws go soggy?
No. Sugarcane fibre holds up through a long service without collapsing. Paper straws soften because the glue between their layers absorbs liquid; sugarcane straws are moulded from a single fibre with no glue seam, so they hold their shape for 4+ hours in hot and cold drinks and do not add a papery taste.
How does a Sydney venue dispose of sugarcane straws?
They are certified commercially compostable and break down within about 90 days in a commercial composting facility, leaving no microplastics. Venues in New South Wales with a commercial organics collection can put them in that stream; without one they go to general waste, where they still avoid adding plastic to landfill.
